Drain clogs are some of the most common plumbing problems and they can happen to anyone. Massive clogs that strangle the entire plumbing system require professional attention and expensive solutions like trenchless drain repair in Hamilton. However, smaller clogs can be easily resolved with at-home solutions. At Dr. Pipe Drain and Plumbing Services, we recommend these tips:

4 Steps How To Clear a Drain In Simple Ways
  1. Bent wire coat hanger

This is a surprisingly effective tool that works similar to a drain snake. Just straighten out a coat hanger as much as you can before bending the edge a little. Once this tool is ready, insert it carefully into a drain and keep pushing until you encounter an obstacle. Once your hanger’s bent edge snags the clog, it’s only a matter of pulling it up. Don’t push the blockage as it will only lead to future clogs.

  1. Wet/dry vacuum

A wet/dry vacuum works well to remove stubborn clogs though this requires a bit of creativity. First, close all vents to create enough suction, then set your vacuum to wet before placing it on a drain’s mouth. Make sure you have a tight seal over the opening by using cling film or even an old plunger. That should be enough relatively new clogs. Once you have removed all the clogs, flush the drain with hot water mixed with some dishwashing solution to remove lingering grease.

  1. Soda/vinegar solution

This is an effective way to clean minor drain clogs as well. Mix 1/3rd cup of soda with equal amounts of vinegar in a cup and pour it down the clogged drain. Don’t let this mixture fizzle out before pouring as that will render it ineffective. This reaction will remove built-up grease, hair, grime, etc., effectively. Let this mixture sit an work for a few hours before flushing with hot water.

  1. Boiling water

This is particularly effective in kitchen drains because clogs are usually a result of fats, oils, and grease. Pour boiling hot water into the drain in some intervals, preferably three times with a gap of few minutes in between. The heat will melt grease, fats, or oils, which loosens a clog. Check to see if water drains efficiently after this process.
