The Do’s and Don’ts of Using a Dishwater

The dishwasher is one of the most important appliances in your kitchen. It takes the tedium out of dishwashing and does all the hard work for you. Like all other appliances, there are certain dos and don’ts you need to follow to make sure this appliance provides you with years of trouble-free service.

Dos of Using a Dishwater

1. Have a Proper Game Plan

You’ll utilize the available space optimally if you check all the things that need washing in your kitchen and quickly design a loading strategy. Place all the bigger items first and then fill in all the smaller pieces; this is the most efficient way to use the space.

2. Organize the Utensils

When you sort the utensils by types, it’s easier to unload them once the washing is complete. Place all similar kind of cutlery together and place spoons in a slotted holder to ensure they don’t stay dirty, which is common when they are “spooning”.

3. Run Your Dishwasher at Night

Most utility companies charge higher rates during peak usage times. Running your dishwasher at night can help reduce your bills as these are non-peak usage times.

Don’ts of Using a Dishwater

1. Rinse plates

Pre-rinsing the plates results in water wastage and it isn’t required if you run your machine every other day. Modern-day dishwashers can easily handle food remnants. However, it’s best to remove all rice grains before putting the utensils in the dishwasher as they are sticky and end up clogging the drain hose.

2. Face all the Plates in a Single Direction

Place your plates on the bottom rack facing towards the spray arms; the smaller plates should be placed in front of the larger ones, so the spray can easily reach all the items.

3. Unload From Top to Bottom

Pieces on the upper rack might have some water in them; if you unload this rack first, all the water will just spill onto the dry dishes below creating a mess and adding to your job.

Following these dos and don’ts will ensure that your dishes get washed effectively, you save some money on your bills and your dishwasher stays in a good condition for a longer period of time.
