Ceramic is one of the commonest materials used in making bathroom and kitchen sinks, as it is very attractive, tough and durable. Unfortunately, even this resilient material can sometimes become damaged by a heavy impact and can get chipped. If you don’t want to replace the entire sink and feel that fixing the broken sink is a more viable solution, here are the steps to follow:
Preparing the Sink
Use a drill to slightly enlarge the chipped area and then grind down the edges. This helps in two ways. It will remove the sharp edges and the inside of the chipped space will become slightly rougher; this helps the putty bone much better to the sink.
Look for ceramic putty with a smooth white finish. This will set under water and will also form a water-proof bonding on drying. The seal these putties form are as hard and resilient as the ceramic itself, which means the sink becomes as good as new.
Applying the putty
Follow the instructions on the pack while mixing the putty and fill the crack with this mixture using a putty knife. Fill the chip as much as you can, pushing the putty right into the corners of the chipped area and then smooth off the top well, leaving a very small amount above the sink’s surface.
Leave this putty till it’s almost dry; use a bit of water and a clean cloth or sponge to smooth out the putty’s surface until it’s completely leveled with the edge of your sink. Now leave the putty to dry for a minimum of 12 hours. Once this surface is entirely dry, you can use a cloth to polish over this finish and then rub in the edges towards the sides of the ceramic so that it isn’t easily noticeable.
