Sump Pump Maintenance Checklist for the Spring

Unexpected rainstorms are common during spring so it’s important to make sure your sump pump can handle it. Many clients experience flooding because of clogged drains in Hamilton problems despite having a pump. This is due to poor maintenance or mechanical problems. At Dr. Pipe Drain and Plumbing, we recommend you follow the checklist mentioned below before spring sets in:

  1. Check for debris

Pieces of debris can get stuck in vents, stalling sump pump operation. This can lead to floods and even cause damage to the pump system. That’s why it’s essential to check for debris. Experts recommend cleaning it every 3 to 4 months in areas with heavy rainfall. It’s a good idea to get the system professionally inspected every year to avoid major problems.

  1. Inspect check valve

The check valve controls water moving in or out of a sump pump system. These valves should be properly installed, facing the right direction at all times. Check your sump pump valve and make sure its arrow is facing away from the pit. Wrong settings will push water back into your sump pit, causing basement floods.

  1. Check weep holes

There’s a weep hole between the pit and check valve. It’s a very small but essential component of this system and should be cleaned every 2-3 months. Remove debris from this hole using a thin stick or toothpick. Make sure you don’t break anything in the weep hole because that will cause clogs.

  1. Sump pump odor

Unpleasant odor is always an indication of a clogged drain in Hamilton. It is also an indication of something being wrong with a sump pump. Usually, the problem lies with stale water in sump pump traps. You can clean it using bleach water without any problems. Mix 5 units of water with 1 unit of bleach and pour it into the trap basin. This will trigger the system, to cycle stale water. This cleaning process will eliminate all odors but if it doesn’t, call a Hamilton plumber immediately.

Regular inspection and repair will extend the lifespan of the pump and ensure it responds well at all times, especially during emergencies.
