If you live in the Greater Toronto Area, you have probably needed to use your boiler more times than you can even recount. While it is always a good idea to let the professionals handle any boiler-related issues, there are a few ways that you can diagnose your own boiler problems.

In some cases, you might even be able to do a few things yourself in order to resolve the problem. By offering you this brief overview, we believe that it will be much easier for you to decide when to call in the professionals.

Problem #1 – The boiler just turns off
There are several reasons that the boiler might be turning off. These include a faulty pump, problems with air in the system, a frozen condensate pipe, thermostat issues, or problems with your water pressure being low.

If it has been cold outside (or you have experienced a dramatic decrease in temperature), you might need to thaw your condensate pipe first and see if it makes a difference. You might also want to remove any air in the system, something that can be done by ‘bleeding’ your radiators. If you think that your water pressure is low, you can call around and see if there is any construction or maintenance work going on in your area.

You have a noisy boiler
‘Kettling’ is often the primary reason that your boiler is making a lot of noise. This means that the heat exchange has a build-up of limescale. Whistling pipes, rumbling, gurgling, or banging can all be because of air in the system or the build-up of limescale.

By power flushing your pipes or bleeding the radiator, it might be possible to remove air and limescale from your system. If you find that this does not solve the problem, it is time to call in the professionals.

The boiler is leaking or dripping
There are a number of different reasons as to why you might have a leaking or dripping boiler. These range from broken parts to loose connections inside of the boiler itself. It is important to understand that you should not try to fix these particular problems yourself – rely on a qualified plumbing professional who can help you.
