A constantly running toilet is more than a mere annoyance; it’s very wasteful and can cost you a significant amount of money. If you defer the repairs, you may end up with an even bigger and more expensive problem on your hands. Leaky toilets are quite a common problem; and these are more challenging to spot than you would expect.
Fortunately, there are certain signs to watch for; you can also conduct a small test that can conclusively tell you whether a problem actually exists or not. It’s best to locate the problem and fix it well before you open your water bill at the end of the month and get a rude shock.
If you take the time to listen carefully while you are in the bathroom and if you notice the toilet is running, make it a point to check it further. If you notice this happening all the time, you likely have a chronic toilet leak problem on your hands. Here are some basic troubleshooting steps to follow:
- Remove the tank’s lid– Remove the tank’s lid carefully and lay it flat on the bathroom floor to ensure it doesn’t fall over and break. The condensation on the tank lid might drip when you are removing it.
- Check the water level inside the tank- If you find that the water level is well above the indicated water line; make the necessary adjustments to correct this level. Once the adjustments have been made, reset your toilet by flushing it once and allowing its tank to refill and then stop as it should.
- Drop in a dye tablet– You can get a dye tablet from your water provider or use a few drops of food dye for this test. Drop the dye into the tank but don’t flush. Wait for 10-15 minutes and then check the water in the toilet bowl for color. If the water is colored, there is a leak. You may be able to fix this problem by replacing the toilet’s flapper valve. To ensure your flush performs properly, make sure that the replacement flapper is compatible with your toilet model.
