As the temperature drops around Hamilton, the scenery tends to become lovely. However, water does freeze and expand – which means that you could have some serious problems with your Hamilton plumbing system. Repairs, water damage, and flooding could cost you thousands of dollars with a burst pipe. We want to offer you a few different things that you could do to prevent these issues from occurring.

Winter Tip #1 – Protect Exposed Pipes

You might have some pipes in unheated areas, think your basement, attic, porch, or garage. You can wrap in the foam rubber pipe insulation or heat tape and protect these vulnerable pipes. If you want to prevent pipes from freezing in arctic temperatures, make sure that you turn on both hot and cold on the faucets of susceptible pipes. Sure it will cost you a little extra, but that is nothing when you compare to the cost of damages with a burst pipe.

Winter Tip #2 –  Check Pumps and Septic

Make sure that you clean out pits and check your sump and sewage pumps and pits for debris. You do not want to block the sump pump discharge pipe, so make sure that you remove ice and leaves regularly. Use a shorter discharge pipe in winter to protect your discharge pipe from freezing. Additionally, pouring a couple of buckets of water into the pit regularly helps to ensure that your sump pump is working as it should.

Winter Tip #3 – Clear Eavestroughs and Downspouts

Make sure that you clean your eavestroughs, gutters, and downspouts and remove all debris. If the water does not have anywhere to go, it will pool around the foundation of your home – and eventually find a way inside. If you have water underneath the shingles, it could freeze, expand, and lift the shingles off your roof.

Winter Tip #4 –Turn Off Outside Taps

If you have a garden hose, you need to remove, drain and store it before winter ever begins. You could cause flooding in your basement or burst your valves if the water in your hose freezes, expands, and potentially bursts. Make sure that each outside tap has the inside valves turned off and remove any water from your taps.
